Young adults make financial mistakes that take them years to recover from. For many it begins during or right after high school as credit becomes available. According to Jim Saxton, chairman of the Joint Economic Committee Study, college tuition has not only doubled over the past 15 years, but “many education analysts believe that past legislation has not made college more affordable, it has simply made it easier to take out loans.” // On average, college graduates owe $47,503 from student loans. These student loans take years to pay off, and in the process cost individuals thousands of dollars in interest. According to Mindy Fetterman of USA Today, “This generation of twenty somethings is straining under the weight of college loans and other debt, a crushing load that separates it from every previous generation.” It seems that today’s ‘generation gap’ is more about debt than it is the ‘sex, drugs and rock-n-roll’ of previous generations and their parents. The reality for young adults is that they are at greater risk than previous generations to begin adulthood with debt.
